An RO water purifier is only as good as its filters. Even the best purifier will produce poor-quality (or slow) water if the filters inside haven't been changed on schedule.
General filter replacement schedule
- Sediment filter: every 4-6 months
- Carbon (pre) filter: every 4-6 months
- RO membrane: every 12-24 months, depending on input water quality
- Post-carbon/taste filter: every 6-12 months
- UV lamp (if fitted): every 12 months
These are general guidelines - purifiers running on harder or more contaminated input water need more frequent changes than ones running on relatively clean municipal supply.
Signs your filters are overdue
- Water flow has noticeably slowed down
- A change in taste or smell of the purified water
- The purifier is running loudly or the pump seems to be working harder than usual
- It has simply been more than a year since the last service
Why this matters more than people think
An overdue sediment or carbon filter doesn't just reduce taste - it can start clogging the RO membrane itself, which is a far more expensive part to replace. Regular filter changes (a relatively small, inexpensive service) are what actually protect the membrane and keep the whole system working properly for years.
